According to the Opinions of the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Industry and Information and the Chinese Academy of Engineering on Accelerating the Construction and Development of New Engineering Programs and Implementing the Excellent Engineer Training Program 2.0 and the Requirements of the Notice of the Department of Higher Education of the Ministry of Education on the Application and Construction of the First Batch of Modern Industry Academies, the School of Urban Rail Transportation of Shanghai University of Engineering Science carries out the application and construction of the first batch of modern industry academy in order to implement the relevant national strategic requirements, actively adapt to and lead a new round of scientific and technological revolution and industrial change, and promote the development of new engineering disciplines.
Under the care and guidance of the School leaders and with the support of Shanghai Shentong Metro Group Co., Ltd., after a fierce competition, the Shanghai Education Commission and the Shanghai Economic and Information Commission issued a document confirming that the School was approved as among the first batch of Shanghai key modern industry academies, namely the Modern Industry Academy of Urban Rail Transit.
The Modern Industry Academy of Urban Rail Transit is jointly established and managed by the Shanghai University of Engineering Science, Shanghai Shentong Metro Group Co., Ltd. and its three subsidiaries. Under the guidance and support of the state, the parties will invest resources to meet the intelligent operation and maintenance needs of the ultra-extensive transit network with solutions developed in Shanghai. After five years of construction, it aims to share information, talent, technology and resources between the university and enterprises, build a new engineering carrier for rail transportation, a new platform for national first-class professions, and create a new highland for talent training with in-depth integration of disciplines, programs, innovations and the industry chain.

On December 23, 2019, the parties signed a new Industry-University-Research framework agreement to set up the School of Urban Rail Transportation of Shanghai Shentong Metro Group Co., Ltd.

On January 18, 2021, with the approval of Shanghai Shentong Metro Group Co., Ltd. and Shanghai University of Engineering Science, the Articles of Association of the School of Urban Rail Transportation of Shanghai Shentong Metro Group Co., Ltd. is released.
The School held a meeting to promote the development of the Enterprise School and consult on the 14th Five-Year Plan. Expert Consultation Meeting on Modern Industry Academy of Urban Rail Transit
On October 18, 2021, the Modern Industry Academy of Urban Rail Transit, with support of the Engineering Research Centre of Rail Transportation Vibration and Noise Control Technology of the Municipal Development and Reform Commission, invited DU Yanliang, member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and Director of the Technical Committee of the Centre, to guide the development of the Industry Academy and the Engineering Research Centre. Mr. Du affirmed the development results, and advised the School to continue to optimize policy, create a sound environment, take the initiative to attract talent, benchmark national centres to lay a good foundation, and strive to localise key technologies, so as to promote the Industry Academy as well as rail transit vibration and noise control.
On October 29, 2021, the School held an expert consultation meeting for the Modern Industry Academy of Urban Rail Transit, and had an in-depth exchange with leaders and human resource heads of Shanghai Shentong Metro Group and Wuxi Metro Operation Co., Ltd. The enterprises praised the School for its university-enterprise cooperation and talent training practices. With the rapid development of the urban economy, rail transit construction will take a new journey.
