Transportation is key to a nation’s development and the foundation of a strong country. With its unique strengths, research achievements and stringent talent training mode, the Transport Program of Shanghai University of Engineering Science serves the entire country with its base in Shanghai and innovates with enterprises, so as to contribute Shanghai's strength to building a transportation powerhouse and promoting high-quality development of Shanghai and the national rail transport industry.

Recently, the Program received outstanding rankings among Chinese universities. In the 2021 ShanghaiRanking’s Ranking of Academic Subjects in China, a specialised institution for higher education evaluation, the Transport Program ranks 27th in the top 20% of the country. In the 2021 Airuishen Alumni Network Program Rankings, a third-party university evaluation agency, the Program was rated 5 stars, making it a top major in China.

With unique advantages, distinctive industry features and close connection with industry, the Modern Industry Academy of Urban Rail Transit has become one of the firsts to make the list of Shanghai key modern industry academies, which was announced by Shanghai Municipal Education Commission and Municipal Economic and Information Commission recently. All eight chosen universities are applying FOR national-level modern industry academies.

Accelerating first-class development by benchmarking with first-class standards

With the rapid development of intelligent operation and maintenance technology of urban rail transit, the connotation and application of related programs have undergone profound changes, leading to interdisciplinary integration of knowledge breadth and depth. In terms of curriculum setting, the School of Urban Railway Transportation clearly requires that the curriculum system should be benchmarked against the national first-class counterparts.

The School encourages various programs to participate in the accreditation of the Ministry of Education and international bodies, with efforts to improve the curriculum system, teaching procedure and facilities according to the accreditation standards. The tasks of Program development and talent training will take the concept of result-oriented education of the accreditation process to improve the overall teaching quality. The Transport Program passed the Ministry of Education's Engineering Education Accreditation in January, 2019. The Vehicle Engineering (Urban Railway Vehicle) Program, the first of the SUES, passed the ASIIN accreditation in July, 2021, which is valid for six years. The international ASIIN accreditation process has also been launched for the Rail Transit Signals and Control Program and the Railway Engineering Program.

“Refined” benchmarking with “comprehensive” faculty development

The School of Urban Railway Transportation attaches great importance to faculty development, implements a talent strategy, optimizes talent attraction and cultivation with top-level design, accountability system, assessment index and performance incentives, and fully respects and supports talents. The School has two national talent teams, nine professors (including two T2 professors) and 103 faculty members. The proportion of faculty members with a doctoral degree is 86.4%. Concrete efforts to build a community of collaborative development

During the 13th Five-Year Plan period, the School of Urban Railway Transportation worked with Shanghai Shentong Metro Group on over 80 projects, with a total amount of over RMB 27 million. In December 2019, the parties signed a new Industry-University-Research framework agreement to set up the School of Urban Rail Transportation of Shanghai Shentong Metro Group Co., Ltd. (Enterprise School).

The parties will work together to contribute Shanghai's strength to building a transportation powerhouse and promoting high-quality development of Shanghai and the national rail transport industry. In January 2021, the parties issued the Articles of Association of the School of Urban Rail Transportation of Shanghai Shentong Metro Group Co., Ltd. The two sides follow the Reform Programme for the Development of the Industrial Workforce in the New Era and the Implementation Opinions on Promoting the Reform of the Development of the Industrial Workforce in Shanghai in the New Era to realise a talent cultivation model of industry-education cooperation and to reform the industrial workforce development in Shanghai, based on the principles of equality, mutual benefit, cooperation and win-win outcome.

The development of the Urban Rail Transit Modern Industry Academy relies on the Engineering Research Centre of Rail Transportation Vibration and Noise Control Technology of the Municipal Development and Reform Commission, takes the initiative to attract talents, lays a good foundation for developing a national centre, strives to localise key technologies, and makes every effort to develop the Industry Academy as well as rail transportation vibration and noise control technology.
